Global Ethanol Market
European Union: The EU has set transport biofuels targets of 10% by 2020, with the goal to reduce GHG emissions by 35%. This means a market of approximately 10 billion gallons of ethanol in 2020.
US portfolio standards:
9 billion gallons - 2008 20.5 billion gallons - 2015
36 billion gallons - 2022
Canadian biofuels: All gasoline to contain 5% ethanol by 2010
China and India: up to 20% by 2010

| Market Spotlight - Fuel Ethanol In the U.S. |
Ethanol is now required as a fuel additive by the Federal U.S. government in all the top air polluting states to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from combustion engines.
Current market capacity - 4.4 billion gallons per year (including new & expanded plants coming on line).
Federal mandate - 6 billion gallons per year by 2012, driven by need to reduce greenhouse emissions by ensuring the addition of 10% ethanol by volume to gasoline, a blend called "E10".
Market dominated by production from corn using fermentation.
There is not enough corn grown in the U.S. to meet demand, so other sources of supply must be found for the U.S. to meet its goal.

Canada has also introduced programs to stimulate the fuel ethanol industry:
- Ethanol Expansion Program (EEP) initiated by National Resources Canada in 2003
- Mandate proposed - addition of 10% ethanol to 35% of all gasoline sold by 2010, expected to be increased to 10% of all gasoline by 2020
- 750 million litres from new & expanded plants is to come on line by 2005 using grants from EEP
